Coral Ideias do Levante was founded in 1996, part of the Ideias do Levante association. Initially, under the artistic direction of Helena Tapadinhas and conducted by maestro Ricardo Carvalho, and in January 1998, under the artistic direction of professor José Carlos Bago d'Uva, the group began to work based on a renewed conception of "pedagogy of choral singing".

From 2003 to 2016, it was directed by professor Francisco Brazão and, from 2016 to 2021, it was directed by professor Vera Batista. In September 2021, the group began to be directed by conductor Maria Saramago. He was accompanied, on the piano, by Rute Simões, Lutz Kettnaker, Silvia Smeman, Alany Steiner and more recently, by Cristiana Silva.

Performed in different parts of the Iberian Peninsula and organizes several events throughout the year, notably the Lagoa Choral Week, the "flashmobs" and the Christmas concerts. He interprets a very eclectic repertoire as a means of pedagogical intervention and audience training.

The Choir rehearses every Wednesday, from 8pm to 10pm, at CEFLA, in the city of Lagoa.

Maria de Jesus Saramago (directora artística)

Born in Lisbon, joined the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa in 1990, where she began to participate in choir groups, such as the Chamber Choir of the Escola Superior de Música. She finished her degree in Choir Direction at the Escola Superior de Música, in 2000, where she was a student of Christopher Bockmann, Vasco Pearce de Azevedo, Eurico Carrapatoso, among others. In 2008, she finished her degree in Psychology, in the area of ​​Language and Logopedia, at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, where she also attended a postgraduate course in Dance Movement Therapy. During her career, she was part of several choirs, such as the Oriana Ensemble directed by Elsa Cortez, the Conductus Ensemble directed by Filipa Palhares, and the Syntagma Musicum directed by Jorge Alves. She taught at various music conservatories, namely, in Coimbra, Figueira de Foz, Fátima, Ourém, Lagos, Portimão and Lagoa (Algarve). She directed several choir groups, such as the Coral Stella Maris (Peniche), the Cor’deLua (Lagoa). At the same time, she was also dedicating herself to various areas of personal development and complementary therapies.

Choir rehearsals are offered by the cultural organization Ideias do Levante, where members can practice singing together and receive one-on-one assistance with improving their vocal technique, interpretation, intonation, etc. For every season, there is a set program for the rehearsals.

Adults and youth over 16 are the target audience for the rehearsals, which are held in Lagoa or online. Professor Maria Saramago teaches classes in both Portuguese and English. A polyphonic mixed choir with members of different ages and nationalities, Coral Ideias do Levante performs a wide range of international music.
Vocal warm-ups and technical exercises take up the first half of the class (30 to 45 minutes); interpretation work and repertoire building take up the second half.

To find out if one can join the group, those who are interested must attend or take part in a rehearsal and then be interviewed by the conductor.

Before and after class is when the group socializes. Work is the main focus during the class.

Note: Since the location, day, and time of classes can occasionally change, we advise you to always confirm that the class will actually take place before attending. This information will not be available to you if you are not a member or active participant in the choir; therefore, prior contact is necessary to prevent any inconvenience.

For your reference, singing ensemble classes (choral group) usually take place, in Lagoa, on Wednesdays, from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm, in the multipurpose room at CEFLA - Centro de Estudos e Formação de Lagoa (formerly Lagoa cycle, near the Lagoa Municipal Sports Pavilion).

Notes: When entering the complex/enclosure through the gate or gate, it will be the door to the building just to the right of the court which has stairs and a ramp. When entering the building the room is the first on your left.

There are three options available to choir members: free, single rehearsal, or a monthly fee.

Option 1: Monthly fee of 10 euros which corresponds to 4 or 5 rehearsals per month, once a week.

Option 2: Single rehearsal for 5 Euros which corresponds to a single 120-minute rehearsal.

Option 3: Free for those who carry out regular voluntary work in the association.

Please note that interested parties can always schedule a free rehearsal trial. As a rule, in the chorister's first month we do not charge a monthly fee until the end of the month in which they join, giving room for the choristers to get used to the group and check if they feel comfortable with it and their work.

For option 1, the monthly fee to participate, only in the choir, already includes the annual membership fee. The amount will be paid (in cash) at the beginning of the class and/or until the first rehearsal of the choir of each month (via bank transfer, PayPal, MBWAY, etc.). For those who pay a monthly fee, it is mandatory to become a member of Ideias do Levante in the first month in which they start paying the monthly fee. Please note that this monthly fee does not include the registration fee (10 Euros) which is paid once when interested parties register as members of the association. Therefore, the first amount to be paid in the first month will be a total of 20 Euros (10 Euros for the monthly fee and 10 Euros for the membership fee). The monthly fee for the following months will be 10 Euros until there is any change in the monthly fee in the future. For option 2, the cost of a single rehearsal of 120 minutes to participate, only in the choir, is 5 euros per rehearsal and does not include the membership fee and annual membership fee. For those who pay for single rehearsals, it is not necessary to register as a member of the association. The amount must be paid (in cash) at the beginning of the rehearsal.

For option 3, the fee is free as long as it is confirmed with the coordinator of the choral group that those interested in continuing in the group are regular volunteers at the Ideias do Levante association. If a member from Coral Ideias do Levante wants to be considered a regular volunteer for the association, he or she must, on average, volunteer at least in one association event per month (after joining the choir) and have volunteered in at least two events from Ideias do Levante over the previous ten months (prior to joining the choir). Please note that the choir member who is considered a regular volunteer must be at least a Friend Member of the Association. The regular volunteer will only pay the one time Application Fee (in Portuguese: Jóia/Taxa) of 10 Euros, and will not pay the yearly membership fees while being part of Ideias do Levante Choir. The cultural association Ideias do Levante offers individual singing classes (classical, lyrical, jazz, pop-rock, traditional, etc.) and individual “combo” classes, where in one class it will be possible to learn an instrument (guitar and/or piano ) and learn to sing. Individual classes are open-ended, that is, class content is worked on according to the students' expectations and needs.

Individual singing lessons are aimed at adults and teenagers over 12 years of age inclusive.

[PORTIMÃO] In-person classes are held in Portimão for teenagers (12-17 years old) and adults (>18 years old).

[ONLINE] Online classes are aimed at adults (>18 years old).

Classes are provided in Portuguese and/or English.

The prices for these activities depend on the desired modality.

For individual singing lessons, for ADULTS AND TEENAGERS, the prices are as follows:
- separate class, 60 minutes, 35 euros;
- pack of 5 classes, 140 euros, valid for use for one year;
- for individual classes, on a free basis, it is not necessary to pay a registration fee, fee, insurance or for the student to become a member of the association.

Interested parties can always schedule a separate trial class and, if they are interested in continuing, they can move on to the 4-class pack format.

The scheduling of class days and times depends on existing vacancies, both in classrooms and teachers.

For your information, the yearly membership fee is already included in the monthly rehearsal fee.

With the exception of the right to vote in the general assemblies of the Ideias do Levante, the friend of the association essentially has the same advantages as the effective members (i.e., full members).
